Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly tag hosted by Bionic Book Worm! Please head over and check out her blog!
This week’s topic is a bit more of a personal one. It’s the top 5 reasons I love reading. There’s many reasons, but below I detail the most important reasons to me!
1. Reading makes me feel less alone.
As a teenager I struggled a lot with depression and anxiety. This, coupled with my physical disabilities, I was quite a lonely child. I would sit in my room for hours and hours and books helped me feel less alone. Not only did I feel like I had more friends through the characters I was reading, but two of my best friends I’ve had in my life have been made because of books.
2. Books have taught me to be more open minded.
I have always been someone who wants to understand everything. Reading has helped me be introduced to ideas that I never would have considered. I am much more open minded and understanding thanks to books.
3. Reading helped me realize that my sexuality isn’t a bad thing.
I grew up in North Mississippi. For those of you who are not from the US, you might not know that this area is one of the most conservative of the country. When I realized I was not straight I was terrified of what that would mean. Reading books where the main character is queer helped me accept myself. I don’t believe I would be as confident as I am now if it weren’t for these books I snuck read on my e-reader as a teeny little 14 year old.
4. It’s just so fun???
This one isn’t really a deep one, I just genuinely love how fun reading can be?? Like I love cuddling up with a good book and not realized hours has passed because I was so entrapped in the book I was reading. There’s really no better feeling.
5. Reading has given me the opportunity to experience things my disabilities do not.
This one is perhaps the most personal answer on this list. I have been physically disabled my whole life. I cannot run, jump, walk up stairs, or even walk around a grocery store. I use a wheelchair sometimes, and walk slowly the other times. This is just a small list of things I cannot do. Books have given my the opportunity experience all these things and many many more. I will never be able to explain how important that is to me.
I know that reading means a lot to a lot of people for many different reasons. These are only a few of the reasons I love reading.
