Top 5 Tuesday // Worst Book Covers

Top 5 Tuesday

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly tag hosted by Bionic Book Worm! Please head over and check out her blog!

This was a super easy topic for me this week!! There’s so many book covers I don’t like.. I’m one of those dreaded readers who DEFINITELY judges a book by it’s cover. I’ve gotten a lot better as I get older, but I still do it to an extent. I just can’t help it! Below are the top 5 book covers I did not like!

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Don’t kill me!! I remember when I picked this book up for the first time (before it got big and everyone knew what it was), I almost didn’t buy it because I didn’t like the cover. I ended up getting it because I was at Walmart and there wasn’t any other books I was interested in. I ended up LOVING the book and about died when I realized the second book wasn’t out yet. I made all my friends read it, and then it got huge. As I’m sure you know already. I came to love the covers over time, but I definitely didn’t love them in the beginning.

Vampire Academy and Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

3456278709527I absolutely adore both of these series. If you press me hard enough I might even admit that they’re my favorite series of all time… But I really really hate all the covers for all 12 books.. I hate recommending them to people solely because the covers such so much.. Am I being too harsh? Probably, but I can’t help it! I do feel like VA covers are slightly better than Bloodlines, but not much. I hate book covers that have models on the covers because it takes away from your own imagination of the characters. Most of the time the cover models don’t even look like their character’s description from the books. It’s one of my biggest bookish pet peeves.

Whisper by Lynette Noni

I don’t like the cover of this one for the same reason I don’t like VA and Bloodlines.. The Australian cover is much much better and if I decide to buy a physical copy I’ll definitely try to find that cover instead.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

32620332I just feel like with how amazing this book is, the cover could have been SO much better.. It’s not completely awful, but I definitely don’t love it. At least it doesn’t show her face.

Kissing the Witch by Emma Donoghue

44537To me this book looks like something I would have made when I was playing around with Paint in the early 2000’s.. It just looks like no one put much effort into it, which is devastating considering it’s one of my favorite books of all time.

All these books have 5 star ratings from me, but they’re lucky I didn’t take their covers into account or I would have rated them a lot lower! What are some of your favorite books that you hate the covers of?

  3. Hahaha, The Hunger Games… you know, it’s one of my favorite series of all time, but yeah, I can 100% see how you would hate the cover! I think I remember not liking it to begin with, too! I also totally agree with all the rest, especially Evelyn Hugo, which is one of the best books I’ve ever read but I HATE the hardback cover! At least I think the paperback one is a TINY bit better.

  4. The cover art for Vampire Academy, Bloodlines, and Whisper are the least appealing to me… I hate it when cover artists put photos of models on the fronts of books too. I wish they still printed out more books where there was actual ART on the cover, the way they used to. I definitely judge books by their covers sometimes, I think it’s kind of hard not to. 😉

  6. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is one of my all time favorite novels, but yes, that cover is HORRID. I actually only read it recently, I waited to buy it until the UK paperback – WHICH IS SO PRETTY imo – was released haha.

I don’t think the Hunger Games covers are bad, but they are definitely very simple and not the most eye-catching or interesting. As for the covers of VA and Bloodlines… I’ve always been so confused by such a popular series/author receiving these shit covers. It felt like no effort went into them, and they (Bloodlines especially) became WORSE as the series progressed.

    Great post!

    • I tried to look up the UK cover of EH but I couldn’t find it? If it’s better I may try to order that one instead of the US cover!

I totally agree about VA/Bloodlines. They definitely got worse and I just don’t understand it. And the series are so good! Especially Bloodlines! But the covers just don’t convey that. I was reading one of them at a restaurant once and the waiter asked me what I was reading. I showed him the cover and all he said was ‘oh no’.. I was so embarrassed 🙈😂
